Pharmacological effects: Glycerin enema is a hyperosmotic laxative. It works by irritating the lining of the intestine and increasing the amount of fluid, making it easier for stools to pass.
Indications: Relieving occasional constipation.
Precautions: Do not use glycerin enema if you are allergic to any ingredient in glycerin enema,you have a blockage in your digestive system, you have undiagnosed abdominal pain. Glycerin enema is for rectal use only. Do not use glycerin enema for longer than 1 week without checking with your doctor. Do not take glycerin enema without talking to your doctor if you have had a sudden change in bowel movements lasting longer than 2 weeks or you are experiencing nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain.
Adverse reaction: Anal irritation; burning sensation; diarrhea; gas; nausea; stomach cramps. Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur: Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); rectal bleeding.
